If your credit report shows a loan you never took, a payment marked late that you paid on time, or a closed loan still open, you can dispute it with the credit bureau – and RBI rules set strict timelines for fixing it.
Step 1: Get your reports
India has four credit bureaus: TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark. You are entitled to one free full credit report a year from each. Check all four – an error may appear in only one.
Step 2: Raise a dispute
- Log in to the bureau’s website and use its online dispute form. Pick the exact account and field that is wrong.
- Attach proof: no-objection certificate, closure letter, bank statement showing payment, or settlement letter.
- Also write to the lender’s grievance officer – the bureau will ask the lender to confirm.
Step 3: Know the timeline
- Under RBI’s framework for credit information companies, the combined time for the lender and bureau to resolve your complaint is 30 days.
- If it is not resolved in 30 days, you are entitled to compensation of ₹100 per day of delay.
- If the bureau or lender does not fix it, complain to the RBI Ombudsman – credit bureaus are covered.
Common errors and the proof you need
| Error | Proof |
|---|---|
| Loan not taken by you | Written denial, police complaint for identity theft |
| Closed loan shows open | No-dues certificate / closure letter |
| Wrong late payment (DPD) | Bank statement with payment dates |
| “Settled” instead of “closed” | Proof of full payment; ask the lender to update |
