Explain this result
Each instalment is assumed to be invested at the start of the month and to grow at 12.00% a year, compounded monthly (r = 12.00% ÷ 12).
Without a step-up this is the standard SIP formula FV = P × ((1 + r)n − 1) ÷ r × (1 + r), where P is your monthly SIP and n the number of months.
You invest ₹12,00,000 in total; the estimated value is ₹23,23,391, so returns would be ₹11,23,391. Real market returns go up and down every year – this is an illustration, not a promise.
Frequently asked questions
How is SIP return calculated?
Using the future value of an annuity due: FV = P × ((1+r)^n − 1)/r × (1+r), with r the monthly rate and n the months. ₹10,000 a month for 10 years at 12% comes to about ₹23,23,391.
Are SIP returns guaranteed?
No. Mutual fund returns depend on markets. Use the calculator with a few different return rates to see a range of outcomes.
What is a step-up SIP?
A SIP that increases by a fixed percentage every year, usually in line with your salary hikes. Even a 10% step-up can add a lot to the final amount.

Worked example
| Plan | You invest | Value after 10 years at 12% |
|---|---|---|
| ₹10,000 a month, flat | ₹12 lakh | ≈ ₹23.2 lakh |
| ₹10,000 a month, +10% each year | ≈ ₹19.1 lakh | ≈ ₹33.7 lakh |
A 10% yearly step-up adds about ₹10 lakh to the final value – because your SIP grows with your salary.
How to use it
- Enter your monthly SIP.
- Enter an expected yearly return. Use a conservative figure; 10–12% is a common assumption for diversified equity funds over long periods, but returns are not guaranteed.
- Enter the period in years and, optionally, a yearly step-up.
Tips
- Long-term gains on equity funds above the yearly exemption are taxed. Estimate it with the capital gains tax calculator.
- Stopping SIPs when markets fall usually hurts long-term returns.
- Use direct plans to save on commissions.
